Who can refer?
GP's, paediatricians and psychiatrists have the option to refer patients for psychological assessment and treatment (or co-treatment) with a psychologist.

The referral pathway?
This can be direct, through a GP who will require that you complete a Mental Health Care Plan (this will take some time so book an extended appointment to avoid being asked to return at a later date). Or indirect, by first being referred to a paediatrician or psychiatrist, either of who may treat and then refer you to a psychologist for ongoing treatment. If you are asked for a psychologists name you could use one of ours.

What about you?
If the GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist believes that you meet the criteria, you can receive a maximum of 12 sessions (2 groups of 6) in a year. There is provision for a further 6 sessions under exceptional circumstances. Attendance at group sessions are in addition, if required.

Who is NOT eligible?
The program specifically excludes dementia, delirium, tobacco use disorder, and mental retardation. Other programs are available for these conditions. Please ring us to find out how to access programs that deal specifically with any of these conditions.

NOTE: You do not have to get a referral to attend our centre. The referral is only if you wish to claim part of the cost through Medicare. Anyone can attend our centre as a private patient.

Since November 1st 2006, Medicare cover includes psychological services delivered by psychologists registered with the state (now Australian) authority and with Medicare.

What is the benefit?
For sessions longer than 50 minutes the benefit is currently $80.20 (more if you have qualified for the safety net requirements). The invoice will need to  be paid in full before attempting to claim the rebate. We can claim the rebate on your behalf and it is paid directly to your savings or cheque account within 24hours)

Private health funds will not cover the gap between your Medicare rebate and our account. Private health can be claimed instead of using Medicare if it suits you.
